Phoenix Rising: Oncology Social Work Leading the Way into the Next 25 Years

Abstract Submission Deadline – September 14, 2009

The phoenix is a mythical bird that appears in different forms throughout various cultures, symbolizing hope, rebirth, and transformation. According to legend, the phoenix bursts into flame, is reduced to ashes, and arises anew. There are many metaphorical applications of this myth to be found within oncology social work.

For the person with cancer, the diagnosis itself is life-changing; the potential for transformation is born. One's perspective on life becomes juxtaposed between life before cancer and life with cancer. Adaptation to change becomes the "new normal."  As one looks beyond the individual, this model has parallels to the broader healthcare environment.

Looking to the future, oncology social workers are challenged to lead the way for all those impacted by cancer. In a time of proposed change and reform in healthcare priorities, AOSW continues to provide leadership. The field of oncology social work and the larger healthcare system are perched for innovation, creative change and regeneration.

Please Note: You have 14 days, or until the deadline date of September 14, whichever comes first, from the date of your initial abstract submission session to make changes to your abstract submission. After that time your abstract submission period will be closed.

Conference Objectives:

  • To explore the ethical issues inherent in the cancer experience

Instructions for Submitting an Abstract

Presentation Format

1. Paper presentation: Paper presentations are given in 50-minute time allotments.

2. Poster presentation: Poster presentations are a less formal way to present your work. Presentations are mounted on corkboard (approximately 4’x 8’). A general poster session will be planned during the conference so that attendees can view and discuss the content of the poster. This is a visual and interactive method for presenting your work and getting feedback on innovative ideas.

3. Workshop: Workshops are a minimum of two hours in length. We encourage innovative and creative submissions for intensive workshops and skill-building presentations. Presenters wishing to submit for a workshop or skill-building presentation should follow the same instructions for submission with the exception that authorship will be shared with the review committee and therefore will not undergo blind review.

Selection Process

Abstracts will be rated blindly on the following criteria:

    • Relevance to conference theme and objectives

    • Clarity of presentation

    • Contribution of new knowledge or practice models to the field

    • Demonstrated awareness of previous work related to the topic (citation of at least three sources such as empirical or practice literature, other conference presentations or credible Internet sites)

Abstracts will first be reviewed blindly by the committee. The committee will accept, accept with recommendation to change format, or decline. Additional consideration will be given to level of practitioner knowledge and skill addressed by the presentation’s content and method to ensure a conference that addresses the learning needs of a variety of practitioners.

Plagiarism Statement

We acknowledge that authors/presenters build upon previously presented work. It is the expectation that this work be acknowledged and sources be credited.

Registration

If your abstract is accepted, you will be required to pay the full conference registration fee.

Honorariums for Abstract Submitted and Accepted

As a general rule, AOSW does not pay honorariums. Due to our role as patient advocates in oncology, AOSW develops and maintains relationships with industry partners to further its mission of patient advocacy. If one of those partners provides an educational grant of $5000 or more to fund an educational program related to the conference AOSW will underwrite the AV costs plus a $500 honorarium for each of the speakers for that specific workshop/presentation.

By submitting an abstract, presenter(s) agree to the above honorarium should their abstract be accepted for presentation at the annual conference. Presenter(s) also agree to channel all fundraising efforts through the conference chair.

Audio-visual Equipment

A LCD projector, screen and microphone will be provided in each room. Presenters may be responsible for charges for additional or alternative audio-visual equipment.
